The problem
Finding companies whose products likely practice a patent worth licensing — or finding available patents relevant to a product a company wants to build — requires connecting a patent's technical claims to real-world products, which patent databases alone don't do well since they're organized around legal claim language, not product categories.
How the workflow is built
Queries translate a patent's core technical claim language into plainer product-description terms and search for products or companies that appear to implement that mechanism, cross-referenced against the patent office's own citation and classification data to narrow the field before manual review.

Pitfalls to watch for
- Translating legal claim language into search-friendly product terms is genuinely difficult and error-prone — a patent's claims are deliberately broad and abstract, and a naive keyword translation will both miss real matches and surface many irrelevant ones.
- Identifying that a product plausibly uses a similar mechanism to a patent's claims is very different from establishing actual infringement, which requires legal claim-by-claim analysis — this workflow should be framed explicitly as opportunity identification, not an infringement determination.
- Patent status (expired, abandoned, still in force, subject to a pending challenge) isn't always evident from a general web search and needs direct confirmation against the patent office's own record before any licensing outreach.
